Obituary

Obituary for William W. Hendershot

William Walter Hendershot, 85, a fun-loving, gentle man, died September 4, 2019. He was born in Grand Rapids, MI in 1934 to Walter and Genie (McDougall) Hendershot. He attended St. Francis and Grand Rapids Catholic Central Schools where he developed friendships that lasted throughout his life. He attended both the University of Michigan and Western Michigan University, graduating from Western in 1957.

Bill married Eleanor Hooper in September 1957. He spent two years in the Army and then joined Ford Motor Company management where he worked until retirement in 1995.

Bill and Ellie have five children: Michael, Elizabeth (Michael) Rogers, Peter, John (Claudia), and Katherine (Chris) McLaren. He was a fun father who encouraged his children to both work and play and sparked their knowledge of our country with family camping trips, western skiing, Williamsburg, and Florida.

Along came the grandchildren: Brett and Lauren Rogers, Meghan and Brad Hendershot, Evan and Carla Hendershot, and Riley and Livy McLaren; one great-granddaughter, Madeleine Calder. Good family memories came from time spent at the cottage on Platte Lake.

Bill’s sister, Nancy Clark, was an important family member along with her daughter Susan and husband Ilan Pragaspathy.

Bill loved cars, skiing, golf, U of M football, and a group of friends who called themselves the “Smooth Dorkers.” He attended St. Patrick and St. Joseph Catholic Churches.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11 am (In state at 10 am) with Fr. Brendan Walsh presiding at St. Joseph Country Catholic Church, 6805 Mast Rd. (Corner of Mast and North Territorial), Dexter, Michigan. Interment will take place at the Old St. Patrick Cemetery, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
