Obituary

Obituary for Mary Alice Beam (Reum)

Beam , Mary 10/26/1949 - 9/11/2019 Ypsilanti, Michigan On Wednesday, September 11, 2019, Mary Alice Reum Beam Ha, teacher, musician, poet, astrologer, fierce friend, loving parent and grandparent, passed on peacefully at home after a brave years-long battle with ovarian cancer. Mary was born in Monroe, Michigan on October 26, 1949. She graduated from Dundee High School in 1967, earned her BA in Education from Michigan State University, and her MA in Special Education from Eastern Michigan University. She taught briefly in Boonton, New Jersey, Hanover-Horton, Michigan, and Concord, Michigan before starting her long career at Milan Area Schools, first as a classroom teacher at the middle and high schools, then as a Resource Specialist at Paddock Elementary, from which she retired in 2010. Mary had a lifelong passion for music, serving as pianist/organist at several churches and in many choirs and singing groups, including Soulstice and Threshold Choir. Mary enjoyed exploring the intersection of spirituality and psychology through pursuits such as astrology, tarot, and art, especially Soul Collage. A wordsmith and lover of all things literary, she discovered a passion for poetry in recent years, and was just this last summer published in the Bear River Review. She is preceded in death by her first husband, David L. Beam, and her parents, Wesley and Irma (Weilnau) Reum. She is survived by her husband Simon C.M. Ha, two daughters, Jennifer (Amory) Cariadus and Laura (Tesia) Beam, four grandchildren, Maia Cariadus, Aidan Cariadus, Jalen Beam, and David A. Beam, sister Carole (Bill) Smith, nephews Mark (Julie) Smith and Mitch Smith, first cousin Brenda (Mark) Reau, and many dear friends, colleagues, former students, and extended family. A Celebration of Life is planned for Mary's 70th birthday, October 26, 2019, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Ann Arbor, Michigan at 2 PM. We invite you don yourselves in the bright, bold colors Mary favored, especially teal and purple. Please send your favorite photos and memories of Mary to cariadusclan (at) yahoo (dot) com so they may be included in a slideshow at the service. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in Mary's name to the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance or Planned Parenthood.
