Obituary for Debbie A. Ruthven

Debbie A. Ruthven of Ann Arbor died August 30, 2019 after an eight-year heroic struggle against cancer. She was 57 years old. She was born in Dearborn on June 4, 1962 to Gerald and Patricia Juneau. She is survived by children Brittany and Zachary Ruthven; father Gerald Juneau; brother Paul Juneau and sister-in-law Dianne Camp; and her significant other, Joseph Cadegan. She was predeceased by her mother Patricia Juneau.

Debbie will always be remembered for her passion for four things in life. Debbie had a great love of gardening and cooking. She shared this latter passion by hosting numerous gatherings with her friends and family and by instilling this love of culinary activities with her two children. Debbie was also a talented hair-stylist and shared her passion and gifts with numerous clients, many of whom became good friends over several years. But of all of Debbie’s passions, her love of her friends and family was the most important thing to her and she shared this love generously.

Visitation will occur on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 from 3-7 PM and Thursday, September 5, 2019 from 2-7 PM (with a rosary prayer at 7 PM) at the Nie Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor. She will be in-state Friday September 6, 2019 from 10 AM until her funeral mass at 11 AM which will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 2250 E Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor. Memorial contributions to the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (3 International Drive, Suite 200, Rye Brook, NY 10573) would be appreciated.

Debbie was more than just my mom's neighbor. She was a part of our life. A family member, a friend, a sister. She did my hair when I visited my moms when visiting from college. She supported my art and had it hung up in her home. She loved my kids and they would hang out at her house when we visited. She braided their hair and made them pretty. Toward the end we talked about things. She shared her wisdom about life and all the trials that come with it. I will cherish our last conversations. I will miss her. It will be hard knowing when I visit that she's not there next door with her doors open ready to entertain my girls or to visit with her. RIP Debbie. Thanks for the butterflies 🦋

Our heartfelt condolences to Jerry, Brittany, Zachary and Joe.
We have known Debbie since the first day she moved into the neighboring house, approximately 25 years ago. We became friends immediately, very much due to Debbie's friendly , open and generous nature. We watched as she nurtured her 2 young children, Brittany and Zachary, both of whom have grown into admirable adults. . Debbie was full of life and energy. In fact we called her the “Energizer Bunny”.She was always up for a dinner or party or game of euchre. Debbie especially enjoyed celebrating Halloween and Christmas and always had beautiful decorations with Halloween and Christmas lights that lit up and cheered the neighborhood during the dark winter nights. Debbie's beautiful gardens and home décor inspired many, including us, to emulate her talents.
Debbie loved to cook and was a very good cook. She would often complain that she couldn't bake and , like the Debbie we knew, persevered until she felt she had achieved her goal of making a really GOOD tiramisu or flan. She'd work on it until she got it right! Her courageous , persevering nature , and her zest for life continued during her long and difficult struggle . She set an example of living life to its fullest regardless of the circumstances. She will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, dear friend, our dearest Debbie. Rose and Moses Everett
