Obituary

Obituary for Cyril Berry, Jr.

Cyril Berry, Jr., age 73, of Saline, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.

Cyril was born in Detroit, Michigan to parents Cyril, Sr. and Lizzy (Lumpford) Berry and was the oldest of his siblings. The Berry family spent a few years in Kentucky, however, relocated back to the Ypsilanti area. Cyril was a graduate of Willow Run High School in 1965 and remained in contact with his friends enjoying monthly lunches together. Shortly after high school, Cyril was drafted in to the United States Army and deployed to Vietnam. Upon his discharge, he went back to A &P Grocery as a meat cutter, a position he held since he was sixteen years old, and would remain there until 1980. Cyril began working for Lincoln Reality as a real estate agent which eventually led him to residential property investment in Ypsilanti. He enjoyed all aspects of being a landlord- doing all of the maintenance and property care himself and he especially loved forming relationships with his tenants.

Cyril met Christine Gow through mutual friends and he knew instantly he had to have her as his wife. The two married on November 22, 1969 and they enjoyed 50 beautiful years together. They settled in Ypsilanti and raised four children together until finally residing in Saline.

He had many hobbies which would include coin collecting, classic cars, camping with his family, traveling with Christine to unique destinations, and was an avid collector of anything "that's gonna be worth a lot of money someday.” He was loyal and kind to all that he knew especially his friends and family. His greatest joy came from taking care of his family and being a proud “papaw” to his three grandchildren and spoiling all of the “grand dogs.”

He is survived by his loving wife, Christine; his children, Cyril Matthew (Jennifer), Cheryl (Mark Cooke), Connie (Shawn Warren), and Clinton; his grandchildren, Brittany, Angelina, and Cyril Lucas; his siblings, Linda Faye (Fritz) Daniels and James (Jane) Berry. He will be deeply missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will take place on Monday, November 11, 2019 from 5-8 pm and Tuesday, November 12, 2019 from 3-8 pm at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 11 am at Nie Family Funeral Home. Friends and family are welcome to gather at 10 am.

Memorial contributions may be made to The VA Hospital in Cyril’s name.

Mr. Berry will be missed. He always gave a person a chance. He was always fair. I know few persons who embody such a code today. Godspeed.
