Obituary

Angelo of Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2019 at the age of 88. Loving father of Francine Chinni Quail & Michael Quail, Denise Ann Chinni, Angelo Thomas Chinni, and Mary Lucy Chinni and Theresa Stowe. Proud and adored grandfather of Michael Anthony Quail, Angelo Joseph Quail, Anthony Matthew Quail, Anna Lauten Chinni and Nathan Lauten Chinni; and loving brother of Carmela Tocco. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rita Chinni of 38 years, prior to their separation; and his brother, Dante Chinni. He enjoyed a long, meaningful and fulfilling life but endured Alzheimer’s Disease in his last years. Angelo placed family first, and was a wonderful father and uncle. He served our country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany following the allied victory in World War II. A dedicated and passionate educator, he earned his undergraduate degree from Wayne State University and his Master of Science in Philosophy from the University of Detroit, and enjoyed a long teaching career first as an elementary teacher with the Detroit Public Schools, and then as a Professor of Philosophy at Schoolcraft College where he retired after a 33 year tenure. Angelo loved music, arts, gardening, fishing, cooking and most of all, gathering with family and friends to share meals.

So many memories. . . Vacation, one of many our families took in Ludington, when a storm blew in, Uncle Angelo drove us down to Lake Michigan to watch the storm over the lake. . .Angelo v. Dante, his brother and my dad, in countless games of Bocce. . . His passion for teaching, also a shared trait with Dante. . . His love of good food, good wine, and good company (and sometimes, a good argument). . . More than anything, his generosity of spirit and joy in life. My favorite uncle, one-of-a-kind man.

From his niece Ellen: Angelo was a great uncle - and human being. I remember his love, intelligence, and humor - and the great food at the gatherings he and his late wife hosted

I also remember how much he loved living on a small lake. I also loved the beauty and peace.

I live nearly 1,000 miles away, but I kept in touch with him by phone. I always could get a laugh from him by joking about the pronunciation of the family name. My grandfather "Americanized" it when he emigrated to the USA from Italy. My dad kept that pronunciation, but Angelo switcto the Italian pronunciation in college (the "Ch" sounds like a K - just like Chianti wine).
